Tape fabricated, says Unitech MD Sanjay Chandra

Unitech managing director Sanjay Chandra, an accused in the 2G spectrum allocation case with whom Public Prosecutor A.K. Singh allegedly got in touch, has denied the charges.

A statement issued on Monday on behalf of Mr. Chandra, said: “He is currently unavailable owing to bereavement in his family. However, he wishes to make it absolutely clear that he has never met the prosecutor in the 2G case outside of court or had any phone conversation with him. He denies the suggestion that his voice is on any alleged recording. It appears [that] a fabricated voice recording has been sent anonymously to the CBI. Any suggestion that Sanjay Chandra is linked with this recording is nothing but an attempt to malign him and prejudice his defence in the 2G case….,” the statement read.

It is learnt that the CBI possesses an audio clip containing the purported conversations between Mr. Singh and Mr. Chandra discussing specifics of the ongoing 2G trial. While the content of the conversations is being analysed, the agency will also ascertain whether the persons involved are indeed the public prosecutor and the accused in question.

Trial in the case is at present in the stage of examining prosecution witnesses; around 90 of the 150-odd prosecution witnesses have been examined so far. Mr. Singh, who was shouldering the bulk of the burden of examining the prosecution witnesses, was not present in the 2G court on Monday.

The CBI filed the first charge sheet in the matter on April 2, 2011 and Mr. Chandra was arrested over a fortnight later. While the trial began on November 11, 2011, he was granted bail on November 23 that year.
