The first-time voters chose candidates with the interest of the nation in their heart and voting for change.
T. Somasundaram of Nagercoil is ecstatic as BJP’s Narendra Modi is all set to become the next Prime Minister. “We have planned a big celebration,” he says. His friend K. Harish from Parakkai is confident that Mr. Modi would form a strong government. South Chennai residents N. Priya, P. Akshara and her brother Akarsh wanted change at the Centre. “There will be improvement in administration. In most sectors, ordinary people were not taken into consideration till now,” Akshara says.
Akarsh wants a stable government. “Mr. Modi has instilled trust in me with his speeches and ideology. It does not matter that my candidate here has lost,” he says. For Priya, it was about electing someone who would do more than whatever other parties had ever done for the country.
Engineering student K. Uma Maheswaran of Sriperumbudur believes NOTA has a purpose. “I checked the candidates’ credentials and went through their nomination papers. The representatives of all big parties have become wealthier than they were in 2009. I had no confidence in any of them,” he says. His friend, a South Chennai resident, opted for a candidate who could take up Tamil Nadu’s issues in the Centre. Overall, the youth in Tamil Nadu voted the way the nation voted.
