Creating awareness on voluntary blood donation alone will enable in meeting the demand for blood for saving the precious lives, said V. Sampath, District Collector.
Special occasions organised by the voluntary and service organisations should be utilised for creating awareness among the general public, he said while speaking at a voluntary blood donation camp organised in connection with the National Voluntary Blood Donation Day held at the Government Mohan Kumaramangalam Medical College Hospital here recently. The present day younger generation should come forward to donate blood voluntarily through special camps to ensure adequate availability of blood at any period of time.
He said that the 94 voluntary blood donation camps held at the Government Mohan Kumaramangalam Hospital last year helped in collecting 9,167 units of blood to the hospital blood bank.
He said getting protected and pure blood is the rightful right of the people.
Providing pure blood is one of the basic responsibilities of the National AIDS Control Society.
The prime aim of the Society is bringing down the spreading of HIV through blood transfusion to 0.5 per cent. The Tamil Nadu State AIDS Control Society and the Tamil Nadu State Blood Transfusion Council has taken various initiatives to create awareness among the youth on the importance of voluntary blood donation and collecting the protected blood.
Due to these initiatives the spreading of HIV through blood transfusion which remained at 0.30 per cent in 2002, came down to 0.08 per cent in 2009. All effective steps should be taken to further bring it down to zero per cent, Mr. Sampath said.
