District Sessions Court here on Tuesday awarded life imprisonment to a youth for murdering his mother-in-law.

According to prosecution, K. Selvaraj (29) of Tana in Vickramasingapuram in the district married A. Karpagam of the same area a few years ago. Karpagam left him following frequent quarrels between them, and started living with her mother A. Mookkammal (53).

Karpagam also filed a complaint against Selvaraj with All Women Police, Ambasamudram, stating that he was torturing her demanding more dowry.

Though the police let off Selvaraj with a warning, he suspected that Karpagam was acting at the behest of her mother. He went to his mother-in-law’s house situated in the same area on August 7, 2015 and picked a heated argument with her.

At one point, he attacked Mookkammal with an iron road, and she died on the spot. Vickramasingapuram police arrested Selvaraj.

The court also imposed a fine of ₹1,000 on Selvaraj.
