To ensure the physical and mental well-being of students, yoga classes will soon be introduced in all schools, Chief Minister Edappadi K. Palaniswami said on Thursday.
The announcement follows an advisory put out by the School Education Department earlier this month urging students to safeguard themselves against physical and mental harm triggered by unnecessary online activity.
The advisory has also asked students to be physically active besides exhorting them to participate in sports and yoga.
The Chief Minister made the announcement at the time of handing over appointment orders to 2,315 post-graduate teachers and 58 special educators at an event organised at the University of Madras on Thursday.
Calling the appointment of special educators a ‘milestone’, Mr. Palaniswami said the government was taking steps to promote inclusive education as it had been revealed that nearly 10% of all the students in the State had learning difficulties.
Stating that the government was doing everything possible to have a transparent recruitment system, Minister for School Education K.A. Sengottaiyan said that a system has been put in place to enable teachers to get their appointment orders fast.
“While it used to take over 7 to 8 months for teachers to get the results and appointment orders, the Teachers Recruitment Board now has made the process faster and transparent,” he said.
Mr. Sengottaiyan further said that as a part of the measures taken by the department to help students prepare for competitive exams, the Anna Centenary Library would soon become a centre where students could get coaching from teachers across the country through video conferencing soon.
“Around 10,000 teachers will be given special training to help students with preparation for competitive exams as well,” he said.
