Yercaud by-poll: Rs 41.7 lakh seized from three persons

A sum of about Rs. 41.7 lakh was seized from three persons near Veeranam in Salem district during a vehicle check conducted by revenue and election officials in the early hours of Saturday.

Flying squad

A flying squad, comprising tahsildars K. Karpagavalli and R. Rajendran and assistant election officer P. Suresh, was checking vehicles at the Achankuttapatti Check Post in Veeranam Police Station limit when they seized the cash from three persons who were heading to Tirupur in a car.

The three were identified as Ramachidambaram (47), Balakarthikeyan (44) and Saravanan (40) of Kalyanasundaram Street at Anuparpalayam, in Tirupur district. Since they did not have proper records for the money, the cash was handed over to Income Tax officials for investigation.

The model code of conduct for the Yercaud Assembly by-election, scheduled for December 4, is in force across the district and anyone carrying more than Rs. 50,000 should have proper documents in support of of the money.

With the latest seizure, the total amount recovered by the authorities in the district has gone up to Rs. 53,47,170.
