The works on the construction of a railway underpass near the Salem Railway Junction at Suramangalam undertaken by the Projects Wing of the Tamil Nadu Highways Department is progressing at a fast pace.
The project is being executed at an outlay of Rs. 17.55 crore.
The presence of railway level crossing No. 113 at Old Suramangalam was causing much hardship to the road users. With all the long distance trains proceeding towards Chennai, Bengaluru, and to Mettur Dam passing via this point now and then, the manned railway gate was closed frequently, due to which people pleaded for an underpass at this point.
The State Government sanctioned the project and the execution work commenced in February 2014.
The construction work is nearing completion on the Old Suramangalam side. The work on the other side too is progressing at a fast pace.
The railway portion of the underpass undertaken by the Rail Construction Organisation is already over.
Another major project of construction of a flyover at Leigh Bozar in Salem city is also progressing fast.
The flyover will replace the manned level crossing on the road leading to Shevvaipet Nethimedu from Leigh Bazar Three roads junction.
The Projects Wing of the State Highways Department is executing the work at an outlay of Rs. 46.35 crore.
The project included construction of 19 pillars and 21 concrete deck slabs. Of this, 17 pillars and seven concrete deckslabs have already been constructed. The rest of the works are in full swing.
K. C. Parameswaran, Chief Engineer (Highways), Projects, Chennai, and Krishnakumar, Superintending Engineer (Highways), Projects, Coimbatore, inspected the ongoing works on both these projects on Friday. Mr. Parameswaran directed the officials and the contractors to ensure the completion of the works as per schedule.
