Women not safe till TASMAC shops are open: Vaiko

March 09, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 05:59 am IST - Ramanathapuram:

Blaming three former Chief Ministers for spreading the evils of liquor in Tamil Nadu, MDMK general secretary Vaiko said women would not be safe in the State as long as there were TASMAC shops.

Biggest social evil

Addressing reporters, Mr. Vaiko said liquor was the biggest social evil and “as long as the evil prevails, there is no safety for women in the society.”

He regretted that there has been growing incidents of rapes and sexual abuses in the State after liquor was made available at every street corner and even schoolchildren fall victims to sexual violence.

Women and children would be safe only if the government imposed total prohibition in the State, he said.

When former Chief Minister Rajaji and rationalist leader Periyar E V Ramasamy vehemently opposed lifting of prohibition, former Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi opened the flood gates for liquor and his successors M.G. Ramachandran and J. Jayalalithaa took the evils of liquor to every part of the state, Mr Vaiko charged.
