“Women in State more empowered than their counterparts elsewhere”

February 19, 2011 03:31 am | Updated 03:31 am IST - VILLUPURAM:

A study conducted by CNN satellite channel has come out with the finding that women in Tamil Nadu are more empowered than their counterparts elsewhere in the country.

In appreciation of the fact an award will be presented to Tamil Nadu at a function to be held in New Delhi on February 23, according to K. Ponmudy, Higher Education Minister.

In development aspects too Tamil Nadu would be given four prizes on the occasion and he (Mr. Ponmudy) would be receiving the awards.

The Minister stated this at a function held at Mazhavarayanur near here to give away free gas stoves to 14,000 families.

Mr. Ponmudy said that the Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi had launched several programmes, including marriage assistance and financial support to expectant mothers that had really empowered them.

Earlier, the Minister inaugurated a Primary Health Centre at Koliyanur in the community hall there and promised to shift it soon to a permanent building.

He said that during his earlier tenure as Minister he set up four PHCs in Villupuram district and in the past four-and-half-years he had arranged for opening of 10 PHCs.

As of now the district could boast of 80 PHCs, of which 14 had been upgraded to have 30 beds each.

The Kalaignar Health Scheme and the ‘108' ambulance service had created health awareness even in far flung areas, the Minister added.

District Collector R. Palanisamy, Deputy Director (Health) K. Krishnaraj and others participated.
