A 40-year-old woman of Kottaimedu, who tested positive for H1N1, died at a private hospital here on Thursday night.

However, Deputy Director of Health Services S. Somasundaram said the woman did not die of H1N1 but of adult respiratory distress syndrome (breathing difficulty).

He told The Hindu that Mumtaj, 40, suffered from diabetes, hypertension and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. She was admitted to a private hospital and was on ventilator for five days before she tested positive for H1N1 on December 11.

The same day, she was shifted to another private hospital in the city, where too she was on ventilator till she died.

The woman’s two-year-old grandson, Shisil Ahmed, who also tested positive for H1N1 on December 14, was admitted to the same hospital. He recovered and was discharged three days ago.
