Sivanthipatti police on Thursday arrested a farmer after his wife committed suicide by setting herself ablaze on Wednesday.

The police said Vasantha (49) of Notchikulam under Sivanthipatti police station limits was living in the house of her younger brother after leaving her husband Balakrishnan (53) following a domestic quarrel. When she met Balakrishnan on Wednesday in their house in a bid to bring about a rapprochement, he allegedly scolded Vasantha.

A dejected Vasantha returned to her brother’s house and set herself ablaze in the night when the others were sleeping.

In the dying declaration she made at Tirunelveli Medical College Hospital, Vasantha reportedly cited Balakrishnan of having forced her to commit suicide.
