A 20-year-old woman was delivered of a baby boy in a 108 ambulance van in Vedasandur near here on Monday.

When V. Vennila (20), residing at a private mill quarters in Vedasandur, developed labour pain in the early hours, the local people alerted the 108 ambulance service to send her to a nearby hospital.

Ambulance van medical assistant Maheshwari said Ms. Vennila was experiencing extreme pain when she checked her condition in Vedasandur. She was about to give birth to the baby in a few minutes. Left with no other choice, Ms. Maheshwari assisted the woman in the normal delivery of the baby in the van itself, using the limited facilities available at that time.

After first aid, the young mother and the newborn were brought to Thadikombu Primary Health Centre, where the doctors said their condition was normal.

Ms. Vennila’s husband Vinodh is running a canteen in the mill.
