A woman constable was found dead with injuries in her neck at her residence in VOC Nagar of Rajapalayam in the early hours of Thursday.
The police have picked up her cousin suspecting foul play in the death of the constable, P. Samudrakani (34), attached to the Keezharajakularaman police station, near Rajapalayam.
The police said an autorickshaw driver had alerted the Rajapalayam (South) Police after he found the woman dead in her house on the first floor. The suspect had hired the autorickshaw from the Rajapalayam old bus stand at around 11.30 p.m.
After spending some time at Ms. Samudrakani’s house, where she lived alone, the suspect had sought the help of the driver to take the woman to a hospital.
However, the autorickshaw driver, suspecting foul play, refused to lift the woman and alerted the police.
The police said that the suspect, who was drunk, had claimed that the constable had hanged herself with a saree from the ceiling fan, when he was sleeping in an inebriated condition.
The Rajapalayam Deputy Superintendent of Police D. Ashokan said that a case of suspicious death was registered and only a post-mortem could ascertain the cause of death.
