Marumalarchi Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam general secretary Vaiko on Thursday urged the State Government to withdraw the Tamil Nadu Pollution Control Board’s recent clearance for the Kudankulam Nuclear Power Project.

The water used in the reactor and nuclear waste to be discharged into the sea will increase the temperature of seawater even up to 43 degrees Celsius, thereby ending fishing activities and the government should withdraw the clearance,” he told The Hindu here. Mr. Vaiko was on his way to Idinthakarai for addressing anti-nuclear protesters on the first anniversary of their agitation.

He criticised the Centre for signing an agreement with Russia that denies compensation in the event of a disaster.
