DMK working president M.K. Stalin on Tuesday urged Union Minister of State for New and Renewable Energy and Power, Raj Kumar Singh, to withdraw all the cases filed against activists protesting against the Kudankulam Nuclear Power Plant (KKNPP).

Recalling the direction of the Supreme Court that efforts should be made to withdraw all criminal cases filed against the agitators so that peace and normalcy could be restored at Kudankulam, Mr. Stalin said the direction had not yet been complied with.

“This has annoyed the people living around the plant and they feel that the State and Central governments are neither serious in implementing the 15 directions of the Supreme Court nor interested in withdrawing the cases to restore people’s confidence on the safety aspects of the nuclear project,” Mr. Stalin said in a letter submitted through DMK MPs Tiruchi N. Siva, Alandur S. Bharathi and T.K.S. Elangovan.

Mr. Stalin said people were genuinely apprehensive about the safety of the plant in view of frequent news reports that the plants were being shut down for some reason or another. “In particular, reports about shutting down of Unit II of the KKNPP has caused agony and anxiety, and hence, I am writing this letter to you for personal attention to take steps to allay the fear of the people,” he said.
