The Bar Council of Tamil Nadu and Puducherry has given an undertaking before the Madras High Court that the council would not call upon lawyers to abstain from courts or indulge in any agitation on the court premises as part of the protests against the recent recommendations of the Law Commission of India.

Recording the assurance given by the State Bar Council, the First Bench of Chief Justice Indira Banerjee and Justice M. Sundar disposed of a public interest petition moved by advocate K. Muthuramalingam (now under suspension) seeking to restrain the State Bar Council from organising the lawyers to protest against the Law Commission recommendations.

The petitioner said the Bar Council of India had issued a communication to the secretaries of all State Bar Councils informing them about the agitation against the recommendations of the Law Commission with regard to amendment to Advocates Act and the conduct of the advocates.

“As per the letter, the State Bar Council is to convene a meeting with the representatives of all the associations on April 16 to make them aware of the agitation programme. When the PIL came up for hearing, the Bar Council said the meeting was not for any protest.
