Governor Banwarilal Purohit visited the Tirunelveli junction bus stand on Wednesday.

Tamil Nadu Governor Banwarilal Purohit on Wednesday chaired a review meeting at the Circuit House in Tirunelveli for over an hour and said he will be watching the progress of various programmes. “What you have done so far in the district is good. Keep your good works going. However, I will be watching the implementation of development and welfare programmes in the district and its progress,” he said.

After presiding over the Manonmaniam Sundaranar University’s 25th convocation, Mr. Purohit had a meeting with Collector Sandeep Nanduri and officials of 13 government departments in the evening to understand the development works that have been executed and the new schemes in the pipeline.

After Mr. Nanduri gave a power point presentation detailing the achievements and the development works to be executed in the district, the Governor complimented the officials for having executed the Central and State schemes methodically.

Even as he was coming to the Circuit House from the University, the Governor visited the Tirunelveli Junction bus stand to personally assess the implementation of ‘Swachh Bharat Mission.’

Since the Corporation officials led by City Engineer and Commissioner (In-Charge) V. Narayanan Nair, who were ready with their workforce to receive the guest, had kept the bus terminus clean, Mr. Purohit was happy.

After cleaning the garbage there for a while, the Governor met a few traders and asked them to keep the terminus clean by throwing garbage only in the bin.

As he released the ‘Swachh Bharat Mission’ awareness pamphlet prepared by the Corporation, Mr. Purohit asked a girl student standing nearby to read aloud the salient features of the cleaning mission.

During a visit to a residential area near Lourdhunathan Statue in Palayamkottai, the Governor went to six houses on Perumal Street and interacted with housewives.

“Whenever you hand over garbage to the Corporation’s sanitary workers, segregate it into degradable and non-degradable refuse so that it will be easy for the handlers to convert the degradable waste into manure,” the Governor said.

On coming to know about the Corporation’s method of collecting plastic waste on Wednesdays, he praised the civic body officials.

The elected representatives were absent when the review was held at the Circuit House.

Kanniyakumari visit

Meanwhile, retired civil servant M.G. Devasahayam, who is residing at Nagercoil, referred to reports about the Governor’s likely visit to Kanniyakumari district on Thursday and urged him not to go ahead with the visit in the midst of the damage caused by Cyclone Ockhi.

“Nerves of hundreds of officials engaged in emergency recovery, relief and rehabilitation works are extremely overstretched. They are running against time and are under severe criticism. The Governor’s visit at this time would divert their attention and severely hamper relief works. Being not part of the Disaster Management System, the Governor can do pretty little to help things. He would be well advised to cancel his visit to save himself and others from acute embarrassment,” Mr. Devasahayam said in a statement to The Hindu.
