The Perumpallam Odai in the city has gone through a makeover in the last few weeks with a better width of water course, thanks to the removal of garbage on the sides through an operation funded by welfare organisations.

The canal which has always been dirty now presents a clean appearance with a sheet of translucent water accruing from run off rainwater along with sewage.

The dredged-out silt and garbage is being removed to the corporation’s dump yard.

UNWO - Masjid Sevai Kuzhu, Erode Spice Round Table - 211, Olirum Erodu Foundatio, CSI Youth Christian Commitment, Erode Siragugal and Selva Charitable Trust are into the process of cleaning up the water course to a stretch of 5 km from the Anicut to Karaivaickal, at an expenditure of Rs. 40 lakh.

The organisations, most of them supported by medical fraternity, got their acts together along with the City Corporation to minimise mosquito impact during the rainy season.

During July, the City Corporation carried out a similar exercise to rid Pitchakarapallam Odai of garbage accumulated on the sides to remove blockage of sewage water caused because of plastic wastes dumped by the public in water courses.

The canal that carries surplus water from Ellapalayam tank turns dirty with sewage from residential localities by the time the flow reaches Cauvery river.
