We will oppose move to build dams, says Elangovan

TNCC leaders to meet Karnataka Chief Minister soon

November 14, 2014 02:17 am | Updated April 09, 2016 10:30 am IST - TIRUCHI:

The Tamil Nadu Congress Committee (TNCC) will oppose the Karnataka government’s proposal to construct two reservoirs across the Cauvery at Mekedatu, according to its president E.V.K.S. Elangovan.

The reservoirs would affect the interests of farmers of Tamil Nadu and the TNCC would take all possible efforts to stop the project, he told reporters here on Thursday.

A team of TNCC leaders would soon meet Karnataka Chief Minister Siddharamaiah to impress upon need to drop the plan, he said.

Asked whether he had sought an appointment with the former Chief Minister, Jayalalithaa, to make “a courtesy call,” he said he was not inclined to “trouble” her when she was undergoing a tough time. However, he planned to meet Chief Minister O. Panneerselvam with senior TNCC leaders and present a memorandum on various “pressing issues.”

To a question, he said his meeting with various leaders could not be construed as a prelude to election alliance. It was not the time to think about alliance as election was far away.

Asked whether the Congress would contest the Srirangam by-election, he said a decision would be taken with the consultation of senior TNCC leaders.

Tiruchi District Congress Committee (North) president M. Rajasekaran and Kancheepuram district president Nedunchezhian were suspended from the party for anti-party activities.

Meanwhile, State CPI(M) secretary G Ramakrishnan urged the Centre to stop Karnataka’s move as it patently went against the Cauvery Waters Dispute Tribunal’s Final Award.

Dravidar Kazhagam leader K Veeramani gave a call for a protest rally on the issue in Thanjavur on November 19. He said all parties should unite on this issue going beyond individual political differences.
