Water released from Sathanur reservoir

With an aim to recharge wells, that are source for several drinking water schemes, along Then Pennaiyar in Tiruvannamalai and Villupuram districts, a release of water from the Sathanur Reservoir into river downstream began on Wednesday.

About 300 cubic feet per second (cusecs) of water would be released into river for ten days. Information Technology Minister Mukkur N.Subramanian opened the sluice gates in the presence of District Collector A.Gnanasekaran.

Wells that supply water to Vettavalam, Vanapuram, Sathanur, Kilpennathur, Thanippadi, Mudiyanur, Gingee, Kallakkurichi, Rishivandhiyam combined drinking water schemes would benefit from the scheme, a note prepared by PWD-Water Resource Organisation states. At the time of release, the dam had 1,175 mcft (million cubic feet) of water as against its full capacity of 7,321 mcft.
