Water released from Papanasam Dam

Pursuant to Chief Minister Jayalalithaa's directive, water from Papanasam dam was released for ‘pisanam' paddy cultivation on Wednesday.

After conducting special pujas, the Minister for Khadi and Village Industries, P. Senthurpandian, formally released water from the Papanasam dam in the presence of the District Collector, R. Selvaraj.

For 137 days

“Water will be released from Papanasam dam for the next 137 days (till March 31, 2012) to irrigate paddy to be cultivated on 86,107 acres in Tirunelveli and Tuticorin districts,” Mr. Senthurpandian said.

Senior officials of Public Works Department and local body representatives participated in the function.
