It will benefit eight villages near Cumbum

Water was released from Shanmuganadhi dam for irrigation of rain-fed areas in eight villages near Cumbum on Friday.

Talking to press persons after the water release, Collector K.S. Palanisamy said that 14.47 cusecs of water was released from the dam. The quantum of release would continue for the next 94 days.

A total of 1,640 acres in Rayappanpatti, Mallingapuram, China Ovalapuram, Erasakkanaickanur, Kanniservaipatti, Azhagapuri, Odaipatti and Seepalaikottai will benefit from the water. The water level stood at 41 feet in the dam.

Reacting to farmers’ appeal on filling irrigation tanks with surplus water, the Collector said that Public Works Department (PWD) engineers had been directed to fill all tanks to meet drinking water needs of cattle, and to improve groundwater table. Of the 19 irrigation tanks under the control of PWD within Periyar ayacut, 17 tanks had water in the range of 75 to 95 per cent of their total capacity and two tanks had water between 75 to 25 per cent. Efforts were under way to fill rest of the tanks to the brim, he added.

Water level in Karunkattankulam tank has reached its full capacity. Water in Periyakulam, Odapadikulam, Otttukulam, Veerappanaickenkulam and Kuppuchettikulam Kaluneerkulam, Narayanasamudramkulam, Vayalpattikulam tanks was more than 90 per cent of their total capacity. On the whole, the storage of all these tanks was 147.01 mcft, he added.


Rain was scanty in Dindigul and Theni districts. Ther was no rain in Gudalur and Uthamapalayam. Periyar dam recorded 8.6 mm rain, Thekkadi 4.2, Veerapandi 3 and Vaigai dam 5.2.

There was no rain in Dindigul, Natham, Palani, Vedasandur, Chathirapatti and Kamatchipuram.

Kodaikanal recorded 2.1 mm, Nilakottai 1.2 and Kodaikanal Boat Club 4.5. The total rainfall for Dindigul district was 7.8 mm and the average rain 0.78.
