With steady increase in the realisation of water in the Cauvery at Mettur following release from Krishnaraja Sagar and Kabini reservoirs in Karnataka, water level in the Stanley Reservoir rose to 20.48 feet on Sunday.

The water released from Karnataka last week reached the Mettur dam on Saturday noon. Initially, about 1,000 cusecs was realised. It rose to 1,912 cusecs on Sunday morning and crossed the 2,000 cusecs mark in the evening, Public Works Department sources here said.

The continuous inflow of water to the Mettur dam is expected to ease the acute drinking water problem in the western districts and the delta basin.

The water level stood at 20.48 feet on Sunday against its full level of 120 feet. The storage level stood at 4.24 tmc against the dam’s full capacity of 93.47 tmc.

About 500 cusecs of water is being released from the dam for meeting the drinking water needs in the delta region.

The falls in Hogenakkal has been receiving more than 2,000 cusecs, much to the delight of tourists from different parts of western districts and the neighbouring States.

Police and Fire personnel are monitoring the banks of the Cauvery and the falls at Hogenakkal round the clock.
