As heavy rains lashed the city on Sunday night, passengers inside the Chennai airport too felt the impact.

There were leakages in the domestic terminal at a few places from the roof, sources said. Officials denied damage to the false ceiling and consequent leakage. “There was a small gap in the roof and water leaked in through it. We have already started the repair work and it will be sorted out soon,” an official said.

Sources said, the baggage conveyor belt got wet due to water leakage.

According to Meteorological department, Meenambakkam recorded 10cm of rain in the past 24 hours ending 8.30 a.m. on Monday.

One flight from Frankfurt that had to land by 12.30 a.m. on Monday was diverted to Bengaluru as the aircraft could not land during heavy rains. It subsequently returned by 3 a.m. Landing of several flights from destinations including Paris, Mumbai, Kuwait, Thiruvananthapuram and Doha were delayed by half hour to an hour. Similarly, the departures too were delayed at the airport.
