Water discharge from Mettur dam stepped up

Chief Minister orders release of 3,000 cusecs of water a day for Adiperukku

Additional 3,000 cusecs of water was released from Mettur dam on Monday to enable the people celebrate Adiperukku festival which falls on August 2.

The additional water was being released as per the instructions of Chief Minister J. Jayalalithaa.

District Collector V. Sampath released the water on Monday morning, in the presence of J. Meghanath Reddy, Sub-Collector, Mettur; R. Subramanian, Executive Engineer, Public Works Department; and Lalitha Saravanan, Chairperson, Mettur Municipality.

Already 2,000 cusecs of water was being released from the dam every day for meeting the drinking water needs of the delta districts.

An official statement issued here said that additional 3,000 cusecs daily would be released from the dam till July 28 to ensure that water flows in the Cauvery, particularly in the delta districts for Aadiperukku.

The quantum of water release from Mettur will be reduced to 1,000 cusecs a day from July 29 to 31, the release added.
