Water contamination kills woman in Salem

A 55-year-old woman died at a government hospital in Salem, and several others were taken ill allegedly due to water contamination in a village in the district, officials said on Friday.

About 100 people in Kottaiyur under Kolathur panchayat union had taken ill following water contamination and some of them had been admitted to various hospitals with complaints of diarrhoea, Deputy Director of Health Jagadesh Kumar said on Friday.

Ms. Rajammal, who was shifted to the Salem GH after undergoing treatment in a hospital in Mettur, died last night without responding to treatment.

Two other women have been admitted to private hospitals in Salem, Dr. Kumar said adding that special teams with two doctors, two nurses and five health assistants have been sent to the affected area.
