The solid waste management programme in rural areas was formally launched here under the aegis of the administration at Katiganapalli Panchayat on Saturday.
This would mark the beginning of the scheme across the select panchayats of the district on pilot basis.
The scheme seeks to cover 12,524 panchayats in the State, and Phase I of the programme envisions implementation in 2,000 panchayats on pilot basis.
The programme envisages monitoring of its implementation through Village Poverty Reduction Committees alongside Panchayat-level Federations, and women’s SHGs.
As a first step towards its implementation, Kattiganapalli Panchayat with 8,310 families has been divided into clusters of 150 families.
Each cluster will be serviced by a sanitation watcher. Over 55 sanitation watchers have been employed and 18 garbage carts have issued to the panchayat.
Uniform
The sanitation watchers have been each issued with a uniform, cap, gloves and identity card.
Earlier, formally launching the programme, Collector T.P. Rajesh urged the panchayats to streamline the programme with the engagement of the public. In addition, special training will be imparted on garbage segregation, composting, and sanitary disposal. The panchayats will fetch the revenue from the recycled garbage.
