The municipality has asked the public not to fix motor pumps on water pipelines to draw more water as it warned the violators that service connection would be disconnected.
There are 39 wards coming under the Namakkal municipality that has a population of 1.20 lakh as per the Census 2011. The municipality draws water from River Cauvery in Mohanur and supplies to residents.
Also, water drawn from bore wells is supplied to the residents. With intense heat prevailing, the need for water has also gone up. The municipality has received complaints that residents are using motor pumps to draw more water from pipelines.
Namakkal Municipal Commissioner Senthil Murugan said that due to illegal drawing of water, the municipality was unable to supply water to all the residents in the municipal limits. “Pumping of water creates artificial demand which is illegal”, he added. The Commissioner said that a few had given new service connection in streets without obtaining permission from the municipality.
“These are against the law. The municipality warns people that water supply will be disconnected if motor pumps are used to draw water apart from seizure of motor pumps”, he added.
