‘Walkers will stop vehicles if police don’t’

April 20, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 05:36 am IST - Bengaluru:

The Cubbon Park Walkers’ Association has threatened to stop vehicular movement within the park from May 1 if the government does not act on banning vehicles on weekends and public holidays.

Speaking to presspersons on Saturday, retired judge Michael F. Saldanha said that the number of visitors to the park, one of the largest lung spaces in the city, increases on weekends and holidays. Children and youth use the park for walking, skating, cycling, and enjoying nature. “Accidents have also been reported owing to over-speeding vehicles,” he said.

“According to a rough estimate, the density of vehicles inside the park is over 9,500 an hour. When the pressure on alternative roads is low on weekends and holidays, there is no harm in banning traffic in the park. Despite several requests to Chief Minister Siddaramaiah and Minister for Horticulture Shamanur Shivashankarappa, there is no response from the government,” Mr. Saldanha added.
