Volunteers, including staff and owners of driving schools, took out a motorcycle rally here on Friday, to stress the importance of voting and exercising the democratic right of voters in the ensuing Assembly elections on May 16.

Flagged off by Collector T.N. Hariharan, the rally started from the Collector’s camp office and ended at the Collectorate after passing through prime roads in the town.

Meanwhile, District Revenue Officer A.M. Nagendran, Regional Transport Officer Amirtheeswaran and Transport Inspector Manivannan and other RTO officials pasted bull’s eye stickers on headlights of two-wheelers and four-wheelers in the town to create awareness of voting among people. The objective of these efforts was to achieve 100 per cent polling in the district. Folk artistes have been roped in to add attraction to the campaign at villages.

Students of Government Engineering College in Bodinaickanur formed a human chain outside the college to create awareness of the importance of voting.

Addressing the students, Collector N. Venkatachalam said that students could confirm whether their names were included in the voter list or not by sending an SMS from their mobile phone. Those who did not enrol their names should do so immediately. They could approach the service centres for enrolment, he said.

Students should not desist from voting even if they disapproved the candidates contesting in the election as they could choose the NOTA option. Educated youth should cast their votes compulsorily to preserve democracy. Students should realise their responsibility and cast their votes without fail. They should also motivate others, he advised.
