VOC Port plans to raise capacity to 182 million tonnes by 2020-21

V.O. Chidambaranar Port Trust Chairman S. Anantha Chandra Bose hoisted the national flag and took salute from Central Industrial Security Force and Port Fire Service personnel, NCC cadets and students of Maritime Training Institute on the port premises on Tuesday.

In a statement issued here, he said the port had initiated studies for the development of inner harbour by constructing berths and upgrading the existing berths to match the port’s facilities to international standards. There were plans to increase the port’s capacity to 182.30 MTPA (million tones per annum) by 2020-21.

Mr. Bose said steps had been taken to increase the maximum draft of the channel from 14 metres to 16.5 metres and of the inner harbour from 12.80 metres to 15.20 metres in a phased manner at an estimated cost of ₹3,462 crore.

The Port Trust Chairman distributed meritorious awards to officers and staff of various departments of the port, schoolchildren, and the CISF personnel. Children performed a variety of cultural events on the occasion.
