Viswanathan takes charge as city police chief

Additional Director-General of Police A.K. Viswanathan on Monday took charge as Commissioner of Greater Chennai Police.

Mr. Viswanathan, who took over from Karan Singha, promised to follow the footsteps of his predecessors and continue their good work. Mr. Singha has been posted as ADGP Member of Uniformed Service Recruitment Board.

A 1990 batch IPS officer, Mr. Viswanathan, talking to presspersons after assuming charge at the Police Commissioner’s office, said his main priority was to create a cordial environment for residents to approach police officials without fear or favour. He wanted to take steps to maintain the safety and security of citizens.

Mr. Viswanathan, having had good experience in city policing with his earlier stints as Additional Commissioner and Deputy Commissioner, also stressed on the importance of solving pending cases quickly.

Hailing from family of policemen, he has also served as Coimbatore Commissioner of Police and was posted in Special Crimes Branch of the Central Bureau of Investigation.
