Revenue officials surveyed a private farmland and open wells near Kombaiyaru at Lakshmipuram village in Periyakulam block near here on Wednesday on the basis of a request made by villagers who protested against digging of an open well near the riverbed.

On June 22, residents of Lakshmipuram had blocked Theni-Dindigul Highway in Periyakulam demanding that digging of an open well in a private land near Kombaiyaru to irrigate more than 200 acres of land at distant places should be stopped immediately.

The village panchayat was reeling under acute water crisis owing to huge withdrawal of groundwater. Some individuals had already dug two open wells and were drawing a large quantum of water to irrigate several acres of land. Construction of another well near this spot would certainly worsen the situation, they said.

Later, they gave a petition to the Collector to conduct a survey of the land in dispute and remove wells that were dug against rules. On the basis of their request, the revenue officials surveyed the land.
