Villagers block road

Demanding the arrest of main accused involved in murderous attack on five youth in Muthugapatti village on July 8, over 300 women blocked Namakkal – Senthamangalam Main Road for more than three hours here on Monday.

A gang of more than 10 youth from Metharmadevi village attempted to murder the five youth of Muthugapatti that resulted in tension in the area. Only after the villagers of Muthugapatti blocked the road and demanded the arrest of attackers, Senthamangalam police registered a case and arrested three persons of Metharmadevi.

Shops remained closed in the area as tension escalated. They blamed the police for their inaction in arresting the main accused and also wanted the TASMAC outlet in the area to be closed. Residents also said that youth from Metharmadevi village abuse them verbally as they feel insecure while on road.On Monday, villagers blocked the road for over three hours demanding the closure of the outlet and also the arrest of the accused. District Revenue Officer K. Palanisamy and Superintendent of Police V. Sasi Mohan held talks with them. While the DRO assured to close the outlet temporarily, the SP assured to arrest the main accused in a week. Later, they withdrew their protest and traffic resumed. The TASMAC outlet was closed immediately. Police personnel continue to remove in the villages to prevent untoward incidents.
