Ending days of uncertainty over its electoral strategy, the Desiya Murpokku Dravida Kazhagam (DMDK) of actor Vijayakant on Thursday said it would join hands with the AIADMK in seeking to oust the DMK regime in Tamil Nadu.
A three-member DMDK election panel opened formal talks with the AIADMK – the first sign that Mr. Vijayakant's five-year-old party is also turning to alliance politics. So far, the actor-politician has been maintaining that his alliance was “only with God and the people”.
“We want to oust the DMK regime in Tamil Nadu. Therefore, we are with the AIADMK,” DMDK presidium chairman Panruti S. Ramachandran told reporters at the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam's headquarters here after a 75-minute meeting.
Preliminary talks on seat-sharing between the two parties had begun. “The talks were cordial and the sharing of seats will be decided soon,” Mr. Ramachandran said.
He said the people of Tamil Nadu wanted a change of government.
To fulfil the people's aspirations, our leader Vijayakant also wants all opposition parties in the State to unite to trounce the ruling party at the hustings.
Asked whether his party was concerned over the number of seats, Mr. Ramachandran said, “What we are concerned with is the DMK government's exit.”
To a question on whether the DMDK would join the government in the event of the AIADMK-led alliance getting elected to power, he said, “We have already announced that we will not seek any accommodation in the ministry”.
Voice of people
When a reporter pointed out that Mr. Vijayakant had said many times that his party would not have any tie-up with other parties, Mr. Ramachandran said, “The voice of the people is the voice of God. Now, people want the DMK ousted from power and hence we are trying to forge an alliance.” He was confident that such an alliance would be “victorious”.
While the DMDK panel consisted of Mr. Ramachandran, the party's State youth wing secretary Sudeesh, and treasurer Sundarrajan, the AIADMK committee comprised its treasurer O.Panneerselvam, headquarters secretary K.A. Sengottaiyan, and election wing secretary Pollachi V. Jayaraman. Meanwhile, Mr. Vijayakant greeted Ms. Jayalalithaa on her 63rd birthday.

Long expected move. The corrupt DMK have to be voted out. They have hijacked the cinema and real estate industries. Instead of improving the basic amenties and infrastructure and living conditions they indulge in giving away freebies using the black money earned from scandals. If they are voted to power again, they will divide Tamil nadu between their sons and buy the whole state. The urban votes wont go for DMK this time as most of them are appalled at the looting that went in the 2G scam and the monopoly wielded by the firts family in every major industry.
Vijaykant has became opportunist. Even after seeing the PMK's exit from the ADMK alliance after Jayalalitha's attitude towards them. Really DMK government has done lot to the people of Tamilnadu. 2G scam will not affect its chances to regain the power as educated people knows real truth. Definitely DMK's freebies scheme will attract lakhs of rural people towards DMK.
I am not a Tamil nadu citizen nor a voter. However based on my observations the people of Tamil Nadu would not be keen on 2G Spectrum scandal. The DMK government over the last 5 years have performed very well with several community development projects successfully implemented and election promises fully achieved, a tax free budget, no raise in train fares and not forgetting new freebees that would come along with its election manifesto. The DMK alliance could still get the people's mandate in this forhcoming election.
Vijayakanth did one good thing of non aligning with Congress Party in Tamil Nadu. Both DMK and Congress are sinking ships in this election. Moreover, because of aligning with one party he can win a few seats. There is no use of contesting alone because of his poor party organisational strength. He can pull more crowd because of his cine character but to pool them into votes is not in his party. Had he aligned with National parties like BJP in Tamilnadu he can gain the organisational strength from that party.
Rama or Ravana please do good for people of T.N. Please keep in mind only three times we can eat in a day and only in 6 feet we will be put in to rest, hence with good mind to serve people of T.N any change in leadership is a welcome move. Mr.Vijayakanth is not doing anything wrong. He got the point: if he face the election alone it will be loss of time. See now he has lost about 5 years. With some power in his hand he can do more to T.N. So, this time his move is correct I personally feel.
Congrats Mr.Vijayakanth and Mr. S, Ramachandran! Right decision at the right moment! Wise decision to not to take part in ministry! Madam J is an intellectual, able administrator as well as courageous. She has ambitions too! But her assertive measures never pleases the lay public as she is blunt mostly and hence labelled 'Aggressive'. May be her colleagues and party men are not her equals in thought and action. That is her draw back. She needs equal intellectuals to bring in changes she desires. I am happy to see Mr. S. Ramachandran who is an astute politician and an equally intelligent administrator guiding Mr. Vijayakanth to join hands with her has done good to him! It enables DMDK to gain more expore in the assembly. Captain's genuine goodness will definitely benefit the parties! All the best!
This is the best thing that has happened to Tamil Nadu in the recent times. Hope they succeed in their mission and set an example for the whole country to have a corruption free society.
Long Term Vision is the need of the hour. Vijaykant has truly lost an opportunity to become a powerful alternative to both DMK and AIADMK in TN. Removing DMK might be the top priority but Alliance with AIADMK is not the ideal modus operandi to go about it. I for one truly believed that DMDK could have won 10 seats going alone for the polls. By aligning with ADMK he may get a few seats more but he truly lost an opportunity to become Decisive force, if not the SUPREME force in 2016.
Lesser of the two evils, I still prefer DMK. At least all IT companies and Car manufacturers came to Tamil Nadu to set up shop. Industry is doing good now. So sorry Vijayakant, you have entered into the hate politics. You could not handle MK and your frustration has pushed you to Jaya.
Finally it happened.. Mr vijayakanth wants only one thing - we should remove DMK from the power. So he did very good job. congrats to both the DMDK and ADMK(which going to sit in the power in 2011). Youth should think well for our future.
What a desparate bunch the people of Tamil Nadu are! Is J an alternative? And to crown it, there is alliance of yet another actor, Vijayakant, and people think that TN's problems are solved! How naive can we be! Here are two parties with no heirarchical organisation, no clear policies, no long term plans for the state and we all think that by throwing out the present bunch of thieves, new set of thieves would make every thing ok! And a respected journalist Cho, suggests that this is the best alternative for TN. How irresponsible can he be?
One hopes that all parties join together to defeat the DMK, with its culture of corruption and nepotism. But it is unlikely as long as DMK has an alliance with the other party that promotes corruption and nepotism - Congress.
We need a revolution like it is happening in North Africa and the middle east. Enough is enough for the cine and family politics. The people of Tamil Nadu have to take the state back into their own hands and drive these politicians out of these politics completely. After driving these rowdies out of power and with no more fear, the youth of the state have to step up to lead a new era with a fresh set of brain and eyes. Currently the fear of the rowdy politics and the mob collution between the police, politicians and the courts is preventing a lot of people from voicing their outrage and disappointment over the highly corrupt system. We need a stage where these politicians will be thrown out and the youth could boldly come forward to participate in a fair, decent and competitive politics with positive attitude. Politics shouldn't be only for the rowdies, the corrupt, the rich and the powerful. It should open up for the honest, the youth, the poor and anyone with a mindset to serve the people. It is time for the people of Tamil Nadu to show some guts and come out of their houses in the lakhs and state a protest and do revolt and take their state back in their own hands. The question is what would take for them to do this? Someone has to break the cycle of fear and revenge based politics. All Tamil friends, are you listening?
it is a foregone conclusion that Congress, PMK and DMK will not get more than single digits in this election and they will be completely washed out. People are fed up with corruption to this great level. By making the price of petrol, beer and onion equal Congress, ably assisted by DMK, have proved that the low class, middle class and top class people are equal in this country. They have looted much more than what British looted from India and have shown their talents.
Its a good move by Mr. Vijayakanth. It is important that people have realised that a corrupt government and a party like DMK running the government only for its family interest should be out of power. We wish all luck to Dr. Jayalalitha and Mr. Vijayakanth in getting to power and bring a new era to Tamilnadu. Party like DMK had never thought of the state, they were giving televisions at taxpayers money when there is no electricity and insufficient water to farmers. They wanted to build Maran's business for which the television was given but they are not giving the cable at free of cost.
The need of the hour is to remove the most corrupted DMK from power. For that, such an alliance is essential. There is no doubt that this alliance would sweep the polls. But, still DMK has started the culture of purchasing votes for money and they have a good financial background (credits to the money looted from 2G scam). DMK would try to purchase votes this time too. People should realise the current happenings at national level and must oust DMK.
The alliance is the need of the hour. People are upset with the DMK-Congress regime and the ONLY alternative can be ADMK, though it can't boast of a glorious past. People need to choose between a pickpocket or a dacoit. Any leader who kicks off a political party, claims to be the alternative for all the existing ones. Vijayakanth was no exception. To paint him as an opportunist won't be fair. After all, politics is all about grabbing opportunities at the right time. He has won the confidence of the rural youth. DMDK is not wrong if they claim to have respected the sentiments of the people by this alliance.
The sole objective of both of these parties is to send DMK out of Power.By Preventing vote Split and consolidating votes against DMK Vijayakanth and Jayalalitha will be in a win win situation. I would like to see an honest and transparent government should be formed after May 2011 elections by fulfilling people's aspirations.
Alliance between AIADMK and DMDK has made difficult to predict who will win the Assembly Election 2011 in Tamil Nadu. Even though alliance between both the parties will not change much in the calculation in Northern Tamil Nadu where VCK and PMK are having strong vote base. Here the DMK alliance is in advantage and will be able to win maximum seats.Still now people voted for DMDK is not because Actor Vijayakanth's fame and trustworthiness. They voted him for that he created imagination among the people that he is a alternative to both DMK and AIADMK. But when he opted for alliance politics definitely he will loose his support base among the people who voted for him. The people who hate AIADMK but voted for DMDK than DMK will not vote for this alliance and once again prefer to vote opposite party to AIADMK. DMDK may loose 25 to 30 percent of its vote share because these votes are clearly opposite to AIADMK and clearly benefits DMK alliance. As of now DMK alliance is clear winner in northern Tamil Nadu. It is unpredictable in Southern Tamil Nadu and its depends on Psychology of the DMDK voters will vote an(voters who hated AIADMK but preferred to vote for DMDK than DMK from 2006 to 2010 Bye-elections. The AIADMK and DMDK combine is in a better position in Western Tamil Nadu as of now and if DMK is able to rope KMMK (Kongu Makkal Munetra Kalagam)then the calculation may change in Western Tamil Nadu also.
One of the worst person- He says he has plans to change TN. But he won't say it because others will steal the Idea. JJ said he comes to Assembly Drunken. Now they have alliance. People - You change. Irrespective of party line. Vote of one good person in your constituency. It will bring the change.
Need of the hour is to oust the DMK regime and Amma is desperate to win the election. DMDK can benefit by getting more MLAs. This alliance could potentially win the elections for JJ. Mind you, despite seven party alliance, she won only 65 seats in the last assembly election. But guess what? there ain't going to be anything for the common man - just another election.
Already we are aware of the past history about what will be the state of an alliance party after election if AIADMK gets majority on it's own. The alliance party will be treated as slaves or else will be chukked out of the AIADMK combine after the election is over. The same will be the fate of DMDK if in case, the AIADMK combine wins the forthcoming election. Then what is the use in bringing this combine to power and how can DMDK will fulfill all the needs/requirements of the people?. Absolutely,an utter waste to vote for this combine. These two parties have joined hands only for their own interests and for not doing good to the people.
How long can Mr.Vijayakant will see others (parties) alone making money ?.So he too had now joined with others to earn for himself via corruption. People must be beware of these kind of persons.
Now where is Rajini? He said before 2001 election that Tamil Nadu could not be saved even by God if AIADMK came to power. Now in 2011 everbody knows about 2G loot. Where is he? But he has to survive in his film business. Both Kamal and Rajini are crocodile skinned actors.
At last Vijayakanth has understood that all alone he can hardly do anything with his 8% elctorate. This is a welcome move. All opposition to the present Karnua looting company should join hands. Let us stop being pessimistic and believe that people are intelligent. The 2G scam and the greedy arrogance of Karuna family have really vexed people.
The Captain's decision to join hands with AIADMK is most welcome. Most of us in Tamil Nadu are really happy with this alliance. I am sure this alliance with the support of other alliance partners would win not less than 187 / 190 seats in the coming T.N. polls.
The Tamil Nadu people expected this alliance in the last Lok Sabha polls also, however now both parties clinched their deal for upcoming polls.Definitely this alliance will make history. People are waiting for peaceful administration and corruptionless government.
This alliance is not going to sweep as said by some body here. They are destined to sweep only the dust. The alliance brought together all MGR followers in one umbrella. That we have seen in other elections too in the past. The seat sharing among other partners will go down. But the sharing of MGR followers will be going up at the cost of other non-MGR partners like MDMK and communist parties. This is bound to reflect in the results too. Also the non-DMK-AIADMK voters were cheated by Vijayakanth and they will not vote him this time. The overall benefit goes to the other alliance which is also formidable. There is no under current or whatsoever in rural pockets where the freebies are going to rule.
DMDK did very good thing by joining hands with AIADMK. If they are able to win the Tamil Nadu election the Congress will understand people are taking a long list of scams very seriously and which side wind is blowing.
Things have changed a lot with Jayalalitha since 1996. Who does not make mistakes? It was the first time she came to power in 1991 and didn't know the nuances of ruling and misbehaved. We did see her rule from 2001 - 2006, which was good. I believe she had learnt her lessons. There is no point in going back to 1991 and singing the same song again and again. Look at Karunanidhi, he claims he had been in power for 5 times, has the situation improved? YES! as far as his family is concerned. His family is one of the richest in Asia now and they are trying to reach the top in the world, which I believe they have already done through 2G.
If the objective is to remove the DMK Government from power, the only way, at present, is to create a winnable combination. In that context, DMDK joining the AIADMK is to be welcomed. What is the guarantee that the new Government will perform better? People can only hope for the best under the circumstances as no winnable third alternative exists. However, the public should see the credentials of the individual candidates in the opposition and see that they elect at least comparably good representatives. I remember that once Rajini said that Tamil Nadu could not be saved even by God if AIADMK was voted to power. I wonder what he would say now!
ADMK and DMDK will give a clean sweep in the election.
Agriculture started to loose its ground after the economic liberalistation .Loan waiver benifits only landlords.Government should help to improve agriculture by means of educating farmers to use advanced techniques. But, this seem hard to come by from both the governments. Whoever comes to power should take a step to improve agriculture or else Agriculture will become extinct.
If we need to have a fair and clean trail on the 2G scam then we have to keep the DMK out of power, so Tamilnadu people have to consider national interest rather than getting carried away with small objectives that DMK will bring as an election win strategy like delivering colour TV, which is again leading to bribery. May be if not Congress then DMK may think to ally with BJP, Let Mr State corrupt and Mr National Corrupt join Hands together, In this case both the parties will be shown the door.
will there be times ,people not from cine industry will rule the state? Hoping for a better future. Any how the family rule must come to an end.Wise decision from DMDK.
Things are still in fluid stage. Let us not hope that MDMK and the Congress will soon settle down. It would be better, if MDMK and the Congress come together and forge an alliance. This is all the more necessary because DMK will not give more than 60 seats to the Congress. So also, AIADMK will not give more 45 seats to DMDK. So why surrender all the past glory and the future prospects? Congress by joining with DMK, is not going to win more than 20 seats. Similarly, DMDK will not be able to get more than 20 MLAs. On the other hand, both parties stand alone, each may get about 10 seats with the prestige and honor. Alternatively, both come together, each may get about 15 seats, but then they can at least say that they formed an alternative to Dravidian parties. The need of the hour is to have a third alternative. It may not win the Majority but then it will sow the seeds for 2016!
This once again proves that TN will still be moderated by the influence of the cine-people.
Great movie dialogues by the leader of DMDK and party member: alliance was 'only with God and the people'. 'The voice of the people is the voice of God.' This new party has no policies or principles. I wonder, if the 2G scam had not surfaced, what would this party have proclaimed. May be an alliance with DMK?
Finally, wisdom has dawn on Mr.Vijaykant to go for an alliance with that of AIADMK,which augurs well for ousting the present ruling dispensation from power. If He had earlier elections, the present government would not have come to power at all. Anyway, it is still better late than never.
Your article Vijaykanth's party ,joins with AIADMK,is a sudden political development in the Tamilnad politics. Both the Party leaders wanted to remove the present administration, and corruption. What the Tamilnad people want is a clean non-corrupt administration and good basic facilities. The promises made by the Puratchi kalaingar,to the people should be fulfilled ,only if the people can elect him.As per Cho's prediction ,the combination of AIADMK,and DMDK, will solve the peoples needs.Let us wait and see the people of Tamil Nadu ,will judge the correct administration, to fulfill their needs.
At last he too caught in coalition politics, there seems to be a political strategy when PMK was given 31 seats by DMK, let's watch how this works out. Whoever comes to power TN people need corruption free rule!
It is an important turning point in the history of Tamil Nadu politics. The need of the hour is removing DMK from power. Positive development.
I am one of the millions of Tamilians who wanted this alliance and wish them to sweep the polls. My congratulations to both Madam Jayalalitha and Mr. Vijaykanth
We Indians are easily inspired, i think he got inspired by Megastar Chiranjeevi and accepting the truth honestly. What ever it may be, our politics and politicians never change.
Dear Vijayakant, where is your priciple of "Alliance only with God and People"?. If you cannot maintain your own principle, how you can fulfill your promisses to the people. Do you think that people will believe you?. Tamil Nadu people have not forgotten the misrule of AIADMK. By alianing with AIADMK, your party will be doomed in the election.
