Vijayakant's election challenged

June 14, 2011 02:14 am | Updated 02:14 am IST - CHENNAI:

The election of DMDK president Vijayakant to the Assembly from the Rishivandiyam constituency in Villupuram district has been challenged in the Madras High Court.

In her petition, M. Jayanthi of Virugambakkam submitted that she filed her papers in the constituency as an Independent. After scrutiny, the Returning Officer rejected the nomination papers on the ground that the proposers' signatures and names and also their serial numbers found in the voters list had not been clearly mentioned and their left thumb impression had not been obtained.

She had sought time for filing objection, but her papers were rejected. Had her nomination been accepted, she would have won the election. The “partisan attitude” of the Returning Officer affected the result. He had not followed the guidelines.
