The cancellation of election campaign by Desiya Murpokku Dravida Kazhagam leader Vijayakant in Cuddalore on Tuesday has given rise to many surmises.

He was supposed to address a meeting on-the-go from his campaign van at Chidambaram and later a public meeting at the Manjakuppam grounds here in the evening.

But the party higher-ups informed the local leaders that both the meetings were cancelled without specifying the future date. When contacted, party MLA (Panruti constituency) P.Sivakolundu told The Hindu that since the campaign van of Vijayakanth broke down en route, he had to cancel the campaign.

The party sources also stated that a throat problem that Mr. Vijayakant had recently developed forced him to keep off the campaign. Inner rumblings within the party too have been attributed as a reason for the cancellation. A section of the party men are revolting against the choice of candidate R.Ramanujam for the Cuddalore Parliamentary constituency.
