Tamil Nadu Veterinary and Animal Sciences University (TANUVAS) has been conferred with the prestigious ‘Sardar Patel Outstanding ICAR Institution Award 2011’ recognizing its outstanding performance in education, research and extension in the country in the field of agricultural sciences, including veterinary, animal and fisheries sciences.

Union Minister for Agriculture Sharad Pawar presented the award to R. Prabakaran, Vice-Chancellor, TANUVAS, at the 84th Foundation Day celebrations of ICAR (Indian Council of Agricultural Research) on July 16 in New Delhi. According to a statement issued here on Sunday, this award has been instituted by the Indian Council of Agricultural Research, the apex body for coordinating, guiding and managing research and education in agriculture including horticulture, fisheries and animal sciences in the country, to award the best institution among 63 agricultural and veterinary universities spread across the country every year. TANUVAS was the first veterinary university in the country to bag this coveted award. The award carried a cash prize of Rs.10 lakh and a citation.

The award was bestowed on TANUVAS for its contributions to the livestock, poultry and fishery subsectors, and for enhancing their production and productivity to ensure nutritional security of the nation. TANUVAS developed and released eight improved sheep, pig and avian varieties, 27 vaccines and diagnostic kits for the prevalent, emerging and re-emerging economically important diseases affecting livestock, poultry and fisheries, 21 post-production technologies and more than 100 livestock, poultry and fish farm management technologies.

The award was also based on the quality of research publications published in high- ranking international and national journals, the number of its graduates winning national fellowships, placement positions of graduates at national and international levels, infrastructure facilities available and many such parameters. TANUVAS also had the unique distinction of offering developed e-courses for two undergraduate degree programmes — B.VSc, AH and B. FSc., — first of its kind in the country.

This award also recognised support provided by the State government to veterinary and fisheries science education, research and extension in the State and the hard work put in by the faculty, students, other staff and the administration in ensuring quality education, scientific research, and effective outreach programmes.
