The Union Minister for Shipping, G.K.Vasan, has called for immediate commissioning of the Kudankulam Nuclear Power Project in the interest of Tamil Nadu.
He told The Hindu here on Sunday that the growth and prosperity of the State depended on the availability of power. It was very unfortunate that a group of people was agitating against the commissioning of the project and trying to plunge the State into darkness. The best efforts taken by the Central government to commission the plant as early as possible was being deliberately sabotaged by these vested interests, Mr.Vasan said. “I would like to remind the hardship faced by the students of Tamil Nadu at this time of annual examinations. People from all walks of life suffer due to the power shortage. It is high time the State government took a firm stand and dealt with these vested interests sternly. People of Tamil Nadu should not be allowed to suffer in the hands of these vested interests,” Mr. Vasan said.
Central government should continue its pro-active stand on this issue and give “light and life to Tamil Nadu" by commissioning the plant. The State government should co-operate with the Central government as growth of Tamil Nadu was involved, he said.

@ B Krishnakumar Obviously you have not followed up on the news in
Japan
The lights are all ON in japan and all it's nuclear reactors are SHUT
OFF! 56 of Japan's 58 reactors have shut down and thousands
protesting against the remaining two will soon shut those down too.
Japan has now started it's first advanced off-shore wind system and is
going full steam into solar! The news item of shut down for stress
tests was just to give a phony "all is well" look to dumb Indians who
will go down the drain financially paying big bucks for costly
uranium, special gear, masks, expensive Russian scientists who are
jobless in Russia which is going full blast into CSPs for hydrogen,
and solar fuel and other modern renewable systems and trying to sell
it's failed floating nuclear plants to dumb third world countries so
that they stay poor, This provides the slave populations needed for
these developed countries to do their dirty or hard work! Wake up and
smell the coffee. Solar is FREE FREE FREE!
Japan is the only country that has experienced the devastating effect
when atom bombs "Little Boy"and“Fat Man” were dropped on Hiroshima and
Nagasaki in August 1945. Nevertheless Japan embraced Nuclear
Electricity. Source. Its first commercial nuclear power reactor began
operating in 1966. Japan needed to import about 84% of its energy
requirements.Today, nuclear energy accounts for almost 30% of the
country's total electricity production.Post Fukushima there was no
knee jerk reaction. All the 58 Reactors in Japan are being subjected to
two step “Stress Tests” to determine whether they could withstand
large earthquakes and tsunamis and to enhance the reliability of
safety checks.Additional safety provisions such as mobile back-up
generators etc are being incorporated. The tests are monitored by the
Japan'S NISA,NSC and IAEA.One by one reactors are being cleared and
Govt approval is awaited prior to resumption. What is the need for so
much noise in India against Nuclear Plants?
@Divya-I REPEAT that radiation has not caused any death in Fukushima
Reactors. Some workers were washed away by tsunami. About radiation
leakage you may see the daily update published in the website of IAEA,
which gives most authentic information.
@ Manjula: Fukushima did cause deaths (5 immediate, to be precise), and the radiation leakage will cause more complications in the future, just so you know.
@Arvind R.-The difference between Hiroshima and Fukushima is the difference between uncontrolled nuclear fission and controlled nuclear reactions.Your comment is thus immature.Fukushima Accident has not caused any death.Your allegations on France dumping nuclear waste on Somali Coast is far from truth and is a false propaganda.17% of France's electricity is from recycled nuclear fuel.Waste disposal is being pursued under France's Waste Management Act by a national radioactive waste management agency under the strict guidelines of IAEA.There is moratorium on under sea nuclear tests also.Greenhouse gas emissions of nuclear power plants are among the lowest of any electricity generation method and on a lifecycle basis are comparable to wind, hydro-electricity and biomass. Lifecycle emissions of natural gas generation are 15 times greater than nuclear and that of coal generation are 30 times greater than nuclear.Technical background is needed to understand. You Tube videos are doctored.
@Manjula K. Sure France, the culture of Europe has 58 nuclear plants - by 2050, they have to find a way of hiding them so they can get back to making their wines superior once more - only, of course, if none blow up by then. Meanwhile, they can quietly dump their toxic waste on the Somali coast. Nobody questions the technology - only that the designers, operators and maintainers are humans only, playing God. And Hiroshima is not Fukushima - one succeeded and the other failed - wish it could have been the other way around:)
@Angela Ma'am, who're you trying to fool us everytime, you say post again and again that, every country has stopped construction of N Plants. It's a blatant white lie! 65 reactors are in construction now incl. 27 nos in China alone. Even Japan is constructing N Plants & therefore please, for god's sake, stand up to the truth & don't shy away from the reality. As regards, your unfliching sympathy for 'poor' German, well,if he's so poor, why has he come all the way from Germany to India?...surely it can't be in search of wealth in India? After all, a country already battling with poverty cannot afford to import further 'poverty' from abroad, Right ? Let us not be hypocritical ma'am. The fact of the matter is here, he was here TN for fishing in troubled waters and good that, he's deported back to his mother land where he should be at total peace as after all Germans have announced the total phasing out of N Plants by 2022, although it takes just 4 secs to shut down any N Plant.
What India needs, is lots of energy at a reasonable price for its development. Nuclear power generation is one way to achieve this. However, what every Indian should worry about is the cost of put up theses plants. Until and unless, India finds ways to build these plants at reasonable cost with safety, things are going to be bad like 'Dabhol Plant'. Let us work hard to control costs of these plants: Contracting Cost control is the big areas. Let Government of NEPC work diligently on cost control. Everybody like to make money but there has to be some limits.
Where was this Central Minister, when there was a delay of more than 5 years? where was he when the entire state was reeling under power crisis in the last few years. It has become a standard practice for every Central Minister who visit Chennai to issue a statement in support of Kudankulam. Can he tell how much power TN would get in the end? As per the Central Government we are not even going to get 400MW as against 2000MW generated power after losses. For this 400MW the people living in that area should sacrifice their lives, live in fear. By the way, what about moving the new secretriat to this area as the scientists, supporters whoever claim as safe also would join them to live in that area? The questions raised by the protestors are not answered by facts or figures rather than answered by positive statements ( similar to forward looking financial statements which no one takes it seriously). Grow up gentlemen.
Kama should see that all the nuclear power plants are near the sea. Kalpakkam plant is already there. there are other power plants elsewhere in India also doing a good job to their states. if some other source like bio gas solar wind are available already we could have done this all along even in places of rajas than where there is lot of wind!!!
Anti Nuclear Protagonists shout at the top of the their voice about
dangers of Nuclear Power Plants to the surrounding population and
Environment.France with a land area of 552,000 sq.km and population of
62 million has has 58 nuclear reactors ,with total capacity of over 63
GWe,supplying 421 billion kWh per year of electricity. This amounts to
one Nuclear Reactor for every one million population or every 9200
sq.km area.None of the Nuclear Reactors have damaged France’s
Environment or caused any public health hazard over decades of their
operation. So is the case with the 20 Indian Nuclear Power Plants in
operation, including that at Kalpakkam. There is no difference in the
basic technology adopted by India and France for Nuclear Power
Plants.Hiroshima and Fukushima are not the same.Anti Nuclear
Protagonists in India who simply parrot the propaganda of Scandinavian
based NGOs,should also know that these very countries buy the Nuclear
Electricity exported by France.
It's vested interests afraid of losing their investments who are
PUSHING the nuclear project despite every other country in the world
saying no to dangerous Nuclear power. A poor German living in a Rs200
per day hotel slandered to turn public opinion against the
protestors. Sad state of affairs to be paid back in HEAVY KARMA for
those who perpetrate the lies. None of us want a nuclear plant at our
backdoor after Fukushima. Are Tamilians to be considered less than
Human? Not fair and lovely enough for New Delhi? Investors of the
nuclear plant are hoodwinked by the nuclear industry. First there is
only low quality uranium available which is very costly (in crores)
second within the next 5 years most affluent Indians will be
generating their own electricity, (See The Solar Power revolution -
here Comes The Sun"(youtube) Thirdly Koodankulam is right on the sea
with no shoreline to protect it at a height of 7 metres. Tsunami waves
reach the height of 40 metres! Wake up and smell the coffee
Who said you could only get power from nuclear plants ? TN has suffered from tsunamis and tropical storms in the past. And you need a lot of water to make a nuclear plant work. The availability of water in TN is a sensitive issue.
