An athlete from Vellore, N. Hemamalini, will represent the country at the Commonwealth Youth Games to be held at Bahamas. She will be competing in javelin throw event at the games.

A resident of Madayapattu, Hemamalini had just completed her Class XII from the Government Girls Higher Secondary School at Odugathur and has applied for engineering. Her father Neelakandan is a farmer.

“She was selected for the Commonwealth Youth Games after she bagged gold at a national event, and also for creating a new meet record at an earlier national-level event. She achieved a throw of 45.26 metres at the event,” V. Krishnamoorthy, her coach, said.

Now, she will leave the country on the morning of July 19 to take part in the event that has been scheduled to be held from July 20 to 23. “She left Vellore on July 14, and is currently in New Delhi from where she will fly to Bahamas. This event is for those below the age of 18 years,” he said.

In fact, she has been called for counselling for admission to engineering courses on July 21, he said, adding, “The Indian Athletic Association will send a letter stating that she is representing the country at the Commonwealth Youth Games to the Tamil Nadu Athletic Association. They, in turn, will issue a certificate to Hemamalini’s parent. With this certificate, her father will be permitted to attend the counselling.”

The athlete has bagged several medals at State and national level championships in javelin throw in the last few years.
