A gynaecologist working in the primary health care set-up in Vellore district has been awarded by the Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare for performing high number of female sterilisation procedures during the period 2014-2015.

Catherine Sathish, a doctor attached to the Primary Health Centre (PHC) of Vaduganthangal, received the national award “for exemplary performance in post-partum sterilisation”.

Honoured at summit

She was honoured during the National Family Planning Summit 2016 that was held in April.

The district administration and health department felicitated her last week.

Individual award

According to A. Shanthi, deputy director (in-charge) of Family Welfare, Vellore, the doctor has received an individual award from the ministry for performing high number of tubectomies during 2014-2015.

Dr. Catherine Sathish performed 1,800 procedures. Being attached to the Vaduganthangal PHC, the gynaecologist covers five other blocks – Nariyampattu, Madhanur, Thiruvalam, Alangayam and Kallapadi.

“On an average, I have been performing 1,800 procedures every year,” she added. She said that awareness on family planning measures has improved among women and their family members.

Voluntary

“Many women are voluntarily coming forward to undergo the sterilisation procedure,” she said.

According to her a majority of them want the procedure to be performed on them after they had two children.

The procedure is generally performed after the delivery or also after an interval of three months or even one year
