Secretary of the Tamil Nadu State Medical Wing of the Bharatiya Janata Party, V. Arvinth Reddy, was murdered in front of his clinic on L.P.M. Street in Kosapet area here on Tuesday night.
According to the police, 38-year-old Dr. Reddy, a diabetologist, was coming out of the clinic when a motorcycle-borne three-member gang stabbed him with a knife at the back of his neck.
He died on the spot. The body was sent for post-mortem to the Government Vellore Medical College Hospital, Adukkamparai.
M.P. Ganesamoorthy, Deputy Inspector General of Police, Vellore Range, and I. Eswaran, Superintendent of Police, Vellore district, visited the spot and conducted enquiries.
Four special teams have been formed to nab the culprits. The motive behind the murder was not known. “We are looking at various angles”, said a police officer.
Dr. Reddy contested unsuccessfully as the BJP candidate from the Vellore Assembly Constituency in the 2011 elections.
He was also the Vellore district president of the Indian Medical Association. He is survived by doctor wife Sudha, a son and a daughter.
Pon. Radhakrishnan, State president of BJP, L. Ganesan, national executive committee member, Mohanrajulu, State organising general secretary, Vanathi Srinivasan, State secretary, and Gunasekharan, Vellore zonal organising secretary, visited the house of Dr. Reddy in Rangapuram here to pay homage.
Mr. Radhakrishnan told newspersons that the BJP proposed to organise a State-wide agitation in all district headquarters on October 26, condemning the murder and demanding the immediate arrest of the culprits.
He said he would be participating in the agitation in Vellore.
Flash strike
The State branch of the Indian Medical Association (IMA) observed a flash strike in all government and private hospitals in Vellore district on Wednesday to condemn the murder.
IMA State secretary J.A. Jayalal said over 600 doctors participated in the strike. The IMA representatives also met State Health Minister V.S. Vijay, who has been elected from the Vellore district, and petitioned for a speedy enquiry into the murder.
Dr. Jayalal said if the government did not show any progress in the investigation within a week, IMA would resort to relay fasting in front of the Secretariat.
Another doctors’ association - Doctors Association for Social Equality – also condemned the murder.
