Reiterating that Tamil Eelam alone could find a permanent solution to the problems of the Sri Lankan Tamils, Viduthalai Chiruthaikal Katchi (VCK) on Sunday demanded a referendum among them to ascertain the need for the creation of a nation.
At a public meeting and a rally organised to commemorate the birth anniversary of B.R. Ambedkar, the VCK adopted a resolution that sought appointment of a credible, independent international inquiry into the wartime excesses of the Mahinda Rajapaksa administration against the Tamils.
Another resolution urged the State government to put an end to the hate campaign of some political leaders, which, the VCK said, led to violence against Dalits in the State.
Addressing the meeting, VCK leader Thol Thirumavalavan wanted the State government to enact a law to prevent honour killings, which had become a weapon in the hands of those who were against inter-caste marriages.
An award ceremony also marked the occasion. The Ambedkar Sudar award was given to former IAS officer P.S. Krishnan, the Periyar Oli award to Kolathur Mani, Ayothidasar Aadavan award to Communist leader T.S. Gnaniah and the Kamarajar Award to A. S. Ponnammal, former MLA.
