: “Though the country has seen buoyant growth in the number of institutions and student enrolment, we are lagging behind in imparting employability skills to students,” said K. Baskar, Vice-Chancellor, Manonmaniam Sundaranar University, here on Friday.

In his Graduation Day address at the Scott Christian College, Mr. Baskar said that the education system had remained the same in the last 50 to 60 years. “In the last 68 years, we have developed in areas like science and technology and information technology but we have to admit that we couldn’t bring desirable changes in curbing social evils like caste and religious discrimination in society,” he said. “The need of the hour is to revisit our education system. The entire curriculum should be revised to have features like imparting skills, vocation, culture, discipline, working knowledge, entrepreneurship,” he said.

Mr. Baskar exhorted the students to lead a value-based quality life through which they could give back to the nation all that they cherished and received from their institutions. “It is not the repayment in terms of money, but the quality of service they may render as civil servants, teachers, businessmen, entrepreneurs, scientists, army men and so on with an earnest mind to serve the country without corruption and to wipe out the tears of victims.”

Those who studied conventional courses like Physics, Chemistry and History should look for alternative opportunities to make themselves employable by possessing additional skills to meet the expectations of the industry.

Mr. Baskar gave away degree certificates to 375 undergraduates, 168 post graduates and 119 M. Phil scholars at the graduation ceremony.

C. Robert Bruce, correspondent-secretary, presided. Principal Edwin Gnanadhas presented the annual report.
