Martyr Vanchinathan’s birth anniversary was celebrated at his birthplace, Shencottai, on Sunday with distribution of welfare assistance to the beneficiaries.

Speaking on the occasion, Collector M. Karunakaran said the memorial for Vanchinathan was built at a cost of Rs. 50 lakh at Shencottai after Chief Minister Jayalalithaa ordered the establishment of the monument at his birthplace. Since 1957, there had been a demand for establishing a memorial for the martyr.

“While glorifying martyrs and freedom fighters, the State government is also extending a range of welfare measures, including free rice, green houses, old age pension, 100 units free power, etc., for the uplift of the poor,” Dr. Karunakaran said.

Minister for Adi Dravida Welfare V.M. Rajalakshmi disbursed welfare assistance to the beneficiaries and honoured the descendent of Vanchi Gopalakrishnan.

She also handed over prizes to the children who had won various competitions conducted in connection with the birth anniversary celebrations.
