The Marumalarchi Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam has demanded that the Constitution be re-examined and amended suitably to ensure a true federal system in the country so that States enjoy autonomy in internal affairs.
In a resolution passed at the C.N.Annadurai's 102nd birth anniversary conference held at Kancheepuram on Wednesday, the party claimed that the federal system remains only on paper.
Citing a statement made by Annadurai soon after he took over as Chief Minister of the State in 1967, that the party headed by him had dropped only the call for separate “Dravida Nadu” and not the basic demand of independent powers for States, the MDMK sought re-examination of the Constitution and suitable amendments to make the country a truly federal system.
Annadurai himself had pointed out that Ambedkar was not against re-examination or amendment of the Constitution.
Thus, India should be renamed as United States of India, the party said in the resolution and added that it would strive hard to achieve this.
In another resolution, the MDMK made it clear that it had not stepped back from its demand for separate Tamil Eelam.
Condemning the Tamil Nadu government for its alleged failure to protect the interests of the State on various issues, the party passed a resolution stating that being a party to the alliance headed by the AIADMK it would work to remove the DMK from power in the coming Assembly election.
