For the second time in less than a month, MDMK general secretary Vaiko met BJP president Rajnath Singh here on Thursday and discussed the alliance issue for over 30-minutes.
Both the parties on January 24 in Chennai formally announced their decision to have pre-poll alliance.
After meeting Mr. Rajnath at his house here, the MDMK chief told journalists that their talks about the alliance was “fruitful.”
The pro-Modi wave, which was sweeping the country, would be witnessed in Tamil Nadu too, he said adding that the BJP-MDMK combine would secure maximum number of seats.
The MDMK leader has already declared that he was allying with the BJP unconditionally. Informed sources in the BJP said soon Mr. Rajnath Singh and the party’s Prime Ministerial candidate Narendra Modi would hold discussions with the Tamil Nadu BJP leaders on how to go about with the BJP-MDMK tie-up.
Mr. Modi is scheduled to address a party rally in Chennai on February 8 and Mr. Vaiko has been invited.
The MDMK was part of the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance during the 1998 and 1999 Lok Sabha polls. Its two representatives – Gingee Ramachandran and M. Kannappan - even joined the government led by Prime Minister A.B. Vajpayee during his rule in 1999-2004.
Sources said the MDMK had wished to contest from at least 10 seats in Tamil Nadu in alliance with the BJP. There are reservations in some quarters of the BJP about the MDMK in view of its pro-LTTE stance.
