As many as 174 persons convicted in the Vachathi case have executed their bail bond before the court of the Dharmapuri District Sessions Judge S. Kumaraguru till Monday (October 31) from last Friday (October 28).
Till Saturday 137 convicts filed bail applications and executed their bail bond as per the orders of the Madras High Court.
Another 37 convicts submitted their bail applications and executed bail bonds on Monday (October 31).
Meanwhile, the processes of giving additional time for executing bonds for the rest of the 24 convicts were continued in the night.
On September 29, the District Sessions Court held 215 living officials and employees of forest, revenue and police out of the 269 guilty in a case relating to the attack on Vachati, a tribal hamlet near Harur in Dharmapuri district on June 20, 1992. 54 died during the course of the trial.
There were charges of assault, rape of tribal women and damage to property against personnel from Revenue, Police and Forest Department. The case was investigated by the Central Bureau of Investigation. The sentence awarded to the 215 government servants ranging from two to ten years. Of the 215, 17 were immediately remanded to judicial custody because of their conviction under rape charges.
The remaining 198 officials moved the Madras High Court seeking bail and challenging the orders of the trial court. Based on the orders of the Madras High Court, they started filing their bail applications and executing two sureties each.
