The prestigious and old King Institute, Guindy an Institute belonging to Tamil Nadu Government should be enabled to make a greater contribution in the fight against emerging preventable infections, the Tamil Nadu Health Development Association said in a statement here.

Recalling that the King Institute was rendering yeoman service in the field of vaccinology, the Association said, at present, other than routine work, it was producing Tetanus Toxoid(TT) and Anti-Snake Venom(ASV). Recently, it started rendering service at the instance of Tamil Nadu Government, in detecting A(H1N1) and was administering vaccines against the virus, on payment.

The Tamilnadu Health Development Association (TNHDA) said in a statement that the Tamil Nadu government could better utilise the potential and the expertise of the Institute to enable it to manufacture vaccines against emerging newer preventable infections like A(H1N1). These could be administered to the population free of cost, particularly because the majority did not have the capacity to pay for the vaccines. The statement was issued by V.Sampath, secretary and Dr.C.S. Rex Sargunam, president of the Association.
