Uniforms, stationery items distributed

A social organisation started by students distributed bags, uniforms and stationery to 155 poor students on Sunday.

Celebrating its first anniversary, Knights Illuminating The Earth's Society (KITES), consists of college students in places including Vellore and Chennai. It started a year ago with 60 students. “Now, we have presence on the Internet with around 150 members on our website and 340 members on Facebook. KITES is a students' organisation for a social cause,” said vice-president of KITES Navin Prasad, a final year college student.

Their activities included distribution of uniforms, bags, stationery items and notebooks to 25 poor students, visits and donations orphanages, distribution of blankets and clothes to roadside dwellers, he said.

“We want to take up activities for supporting education, Right to Information Act and tree planting,” he said.

Additional Superintendent of Police S. Pattabi told the organisation to take forward messages on patriotism to students. He promised help to the students' organisation.

S.K. Sekar, director, Centre for Disaster Mitigation and Management of VIT University, spoke.
